Abstract
Preoperative deposit of autologous blood is a desirable clinical practice supported by hospital blood bank and it represents a source of blood for elective surgery. We analyzed the records of 159 patients who performed the autologous blood
donations
prior to their elective surgery during 2 years between March 1, 1990 and March, 31, 1992 (male: 86, female:73). The mean age was 28-year old (range: 16-65)/
Autologous blood donations were performed in 65 patients with cardiac surgery, 91 with oral and maxillofacial surgery, 1 with orthopedic surgery and 2 in bone marrow transplantation donors. Among the some patient undergoing cardiac surgery, intra
and
postoperative salvage was also performed.
We expected the potential benefit of predeposit of autologous blood is that physicians may alter their transfusion practices among patients who clearly state that homologous blood exposure should be avoided if possible. In Korea, autologous blood
practice is at the beginning and very primitive but the participation in autologous blood donation programs will be increased. The results of our retrospective analysis suggest that preoperative autologus blood donation in patients planning open
heart
surgery are both safe and effective.
